The Midnight Toker. This sat in my wishlist purgatory for way too long. Psychedelic Stoner that I discovered on the Doomed & Stoned Asia comp. This re-released album is a stellar document and should be in all collections for fans of this genre. Favorite track: Eternal Elysium (Bonus Track).

The first release in Robustfellow’s Robust Relics Series, which is aimed to breathe new life into the excellent albums from the past, is “Searching Low&High” by the Japanese’ Heavy Psych/Doom masterminds Eternal Elysium. Since its initial release on CDs in 2005 and vinyls in 2011, it has become a difficult-to-find item of ebay and discogs and this is why Robustfellow Prods. felt that this is important to give this classic and demanded album a new incarnation.

“I think people can feel more raw and natural vibes on this remix version. And I feel this one is still deep and heavy. The big differences in sound between the original release and this remix/remaster are the textures and feeling of air/ambience,” Yukito Okazaki comments. “Those are the things I’m really aware of and taking care of now.”

Band Bio

Eternal Elysium is a Doom/Stoner power-trio from Nagoya, Japan. Founded in 1991, the band was one of the early pioneers of the Japanese doom scene, along with Church of Misery. Deeply influenced by ‘60s-‘70s heavy-rock bands like Black Sabbath, Grand Funk Railroad and Flower Travellin’ Band, the band also takes cues from early doom legends Trouble, Saint Vitus and Pentagram. Heavy grooves and psychedelic textures prevail, with the current longstanding lineup continuing to explore vocal harmonies and arrangements with each new release. Eternal Elysium has spread their positive-doom vibes around the world with tours in the US, Europe, Australia and S.Korea, and they gig regularly throughout Japan. Art, music and nature continue to inspire the band in its ongoing search for its next groovy trip.

"Searching Low and High was originally released in 2005 on CD in Japan only. Being the first release to feature bassist Tana Haugo and drummer Antonio Ishikawa in the new incarnation of Eternal Elysium, SH&L travels into fresh musical territory for the band, melding a decidedly "rock" sound into their classic mix of psychedelic doom influenced stoner metal. Inspired by the adventures of trying to score a bag of the "Sticky Icky" in the mystical land of Japan, SH&L on vinyl features all 8 classic cuts from the original CD (including my personal favorite "Before the Morning Comes"), re-mixed and mastered the way the band intended, and includes 2 additional BONUS TRACKS, never released anywhere (Eternal Elysium and The Spiral Conclusion)."
